Information Management using BIM according to ISO 19650

The ISO 19650 series of standards sets out the principles and requirements for managing information over the whole life cycle of a building or civil engineering asset, from design and construction to operation and maintenance, using Building Information Modelling (BIM).

The aim of the standard is for all parties involved in a project (client, designers, contractors, facility managers) to produce, exchange and use information in a common, structured and controlled way. This reduces errors, rework, delays and costs, and the client receives reliable data for operating the asset.

The ISO 19650 series consists of the following parts:

• ISO 19650-1: Concepts and principles.
• ISO 19650-2: Delivery phase of the assets (design and construction).
• ISO 19650-3: Operational phase of the assets.
• ISO 19650-4: Information exchange.
• ISO 19650-5: Security-minded approach to information management.
• ISO 19650-6: Health and safety.

Implementing ISO 19650 in an organisation includes:

• Defining the Organisational Information Requirements (OIR), Project Information Requirements (PIR), Exchange Information Requirements (EIR) and Asset Information Requirements (AIR).
• Preparing the BIM Execution Plan (BEP).

• Naming, coding and approval status rules for files and models.
